Pre-European Maori hairstyles

We are often asked about traditional Maori hairstyles.

The picture opposite comes from "Taonga tuku iho : illustrated encyclopedia of traditional Maori life / by A.W. Reed ; revised by Buddy Mikaere" which has a page on how Maori would have worn their hair in pre-European times.

Band rotunda in Ferrybank Park

The band rotunda was constructed in 1916 thanks to the efforts of the Hamilton Beautifying Society.

From the 3rd AGM of the 16th (Waikato) Regimental Band (as reported in the Waikato Times 25 July 1916):

"Your committee are pleased to record the erection and completion of a very handsome band rotunda at Ferry Bank by the Municipal Council, and we hope that the band will be able during the summer months to make good use of this splendid opportunity afforded for open-air programmes."

Do you have any information, memories or photographs of the band rotunda? Please post your comments.
